How I Got Here

Picture
Me and my good, good boy back in 2014
Not by meticulous planning, that's for sure.  Don't get me wrong -- I love my schedules and itineraries.  Still, the best bits of my life seem to have come about through happenstance.

Great Detours

Nothing against the old alma mater, but I chose to attend Georgia Southern University based  solely on two of the programs it had:  a linguistics department and a marching band.  Shortly after I arrived in 2005, I joined the local chapter of Tau Beta Sigma.  My life was all the more fulfilling for it.

Presiding over the TBSigma chapter in 2009 allowed me to meet one particularly cool woman. We made fast friends; the following year I asked her out on a whim.  We married in 2019, ending one journey in infinite favor of another.

She asked me to come work in the office of Woodruff Scout Camp in 2011.  I wasn't feeling it then, but she talked me into it a year later.  It's been the most fulfilling series of jobs (Office Assistant >> Office Manager >> Business Manager) I've had the pleasure of undertaking.

In 2014, a visiting family brought a weary and starving puppy into the camp office.  I connected with it instantly and, even though I didn't have a place to keep him for the rest of the summer, opted to take him in when the season ended.  He continues to have a permanent spot in my heart (as well as under mine and my wife's bed).

And, as of 2021, I am shooting for the moon by starting up my own proofreading endeavor.  It's not  quite the full-time novelist position I dream of, but it's a dive in the right direction.

And now you're caught up.  Lend me your eyes, or toss me a coin -- every constructive bit helps my spirit or my wallet.

Education

Writing & Linguistics Bachelor of Arts (2009), Georgia Southern University
  • With a concentration in Linguistics, a field that doesn't get enough shine on it
  • I wanted the knowledge to create my own languages; I've already gotten one pretty extensive conlang out of it
  • My interest was inspired by (a televised behind-the-scenes feature for) Atlantis: The Lost Empire
=
Political Science Bachelor of Science (2013), Georgia Southern University
  • I wanted to understand why... some people were so adamant that then-President Obama not do measurably useful things for American citizens
  • The degree didn't grant as much of a foothold in the halls of local government as I'd hoped
  • Working the polls for a few election cycles (2012 through 2016) was neat. overall
